Pep Guardiola acknowledges that Manchester City’s Premier League loss to Aston Villa gave them what they deserved.
The reigning champions’ league-long winless streak came to an end as Leon Bailey’s goal in the second half condemned them to a 1-0 loss.
As a result, they are now six points behind leaders Arsenal in fourth place in the standings, and manager Guardiola acknowledged that his team wasn’t the greatest on the night.
He declared, “Aston Villa were better.”
“They had an amazing game. We had trouble making our passes and acting aggressively when we were trailing. The superior team prevailed. We had trouble, particularly in the early part. The second part was an entirely different story. We made some adjustments, but we weren’t able to locate the quality of pass or movement throughout the entire game in the last third.
“The first 15 or 20 minutes were best, but after that they had the momentum.”They are a group of people. They applied good pressure. We had a little trouble finding the pockets because of their extreme organisation, and we were a little behind schedule.”
Following a string of draws against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Spurs, City suffers their defeat.
Since March–April 2017, this is the first time they have lost four Premier League games.
They are currently getting ready to play Luton on Sunday; if they lose, they won’t be able to top the standings on Christmas Day.
“The fact that we didn’t win the last two games, we had a little bit of pressure here,” said Guardiola. “But the Premier League’s calibre is the problem. A few of the teams are quite good. The games we had played earlier were enjoyable. Aston Villa was superior today.
“Getting to Luton and trying to win the game is the task. That’s the way things really are. We are fully aware of our actions and our standing. We need to get them back up and figure out how to play better and win games.”
Conversely, Villa is experiencing a prosperous run of form.
They now sit in third place in the standings, four points behind champions Arsenal, after their 14th straight home victory in the league.
This has stoked speculation that they might launch an unexpected championship push, but manager Unai Emery is determined to keep things realistic.
He declared, “It’s a very good victory.” “We have to think that we are currently in the top four, roughly. However, in comparison to other teams, we are not a contender right now.”We need to be enthusiastic, but we also need to maintain equilibrium. “We play Arsenal on Saturday; perhaps after Arsenal, we can take a couple of days off and try to savour the moment.” But for now, we must maintain our focus.”
