The Edmonton Oilers recall Ben Gleason and assign Philip Broberg to the AHL amid trade rumours.

In light of trade rumours involving the youthful rearguard, the Edmonton Oilers demoted defenseman Philip Brobreg to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League on Thursday.
Then, following an incredible preseason and impressive debut, the team called up defenseman Ben Gleason from the AHL.

GM Ken Holland denied any involvement in the rumoured clearance the Oilers had given Broberg’s camp to pursue a trade, addressing TSN’s Ryan Rishaug earlier this week.
However, Broberg’s agent, Darrin Feris, commented to Rishaug in that same article, saying, “This matter reflects both me and my client’s frustration with the Oilers,” and that he and Broberg are actively working together to address and resolve the issue in private.

The two sides are at an all-time high right now. For the past three seasons, Broberg has only made 42 AHL appearances and 79 NHL appearances combined. Healthy has been passed on by Vincent Desharnais in the depth chart, having been scratched more times than one could count on their fingers and toes during that period.

Even if there have been occasions when Broberg could have and ought to have done more, the Oilers haven’t done a sufficient job of enabling the player to gain confidence in North America at either professional level, so this most recent assignment presents him with the opportunity to achieve just that. Broberg is anticipated to join the AHL Condors in Ontario, where they will take on the LA Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Reign, on Friday.
Gleason, meanwhile, has performed admirably for the Condors thus far this season, tallying two goals and nine points in 14 contests. He will serve as an additional skater for the Oilers’ defence.
