Green Bay, Wisconsin – The Green Bay Packers will have at least one new position coach under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, as longtime defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery has decided to pursue other possibilities, according to The Athletic. According to PackersNews.com, one of those options is to join Jerod Mayo’s newly formed staff with the New England Patriots. According to the story, all of Green Bay’s defensive assistant coaches are being given the opportunity to explore their alternatives as the team transitions to a new defense after three years under Joe Barry.

Montgomery was Green Bay’s longest-tenured assistant coach. Montgomery, who was named co-defensive coordinator at Oklahoma in 2015, elected to join the Packers as an assistant defensive line coach under Dom Capers and Mike McCarthy. After the 2017 season, he was hired as Texas A&M’s associate head coach and defensive line coach, but he later decided to return to Green Bay. Montgomery weathered the coaching shift from McCarthy to Matt LaFleur, as well as the defensive coordinator transfer from Capers to Mike Pettine to Barry. Whoever succeeds Montgomery will inherit a youthful and talented team with one obvious vulnerability.

Third-year player TJ Slaton, second-year player Devonte Wyatt, and newcomers Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks completed this year’s roster. That young group had some moments. At times, Slaton was a formidable opponent on the run. Wyatt provided a solid inside rush and could have had 10 sacks if he hadn’t missed more tackles than any other defensive tackle in the league. Brooks rapidly surpassed Wooden among the newcomers and also delivered a consistent rush. Wooden made some excellent run-defending snaps.

However, the run defense was always terrible. In reality, throughout LaFleur’s four years as head coach, the Packers allowed the league’s lowest 4.66 yards per rush. In 2023, the Packers finished 23rd in terms of yards allowed per rush (4.42). In the playoffs, they were 10th out of 14 teams, allowing 4.78 yards per carry.
