Darnell Mooney, an NFL veteran wide receiver, got a new contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Mooney played his whole professional career with the Chicago Bears.
In 2023, Mooney had a poor year. The once 1,000-yard receiver’s production dropped, most likely owing to the signing of wide out D.J. Moore and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Mooney concluded the 2023 season with 31 receptions for 414 yards and one touchdown in 15 games.
Mooney was selected 173rd overall in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft. With a thinner build at 5’11” and 173 pounds, his elusive stature resulted in plenty of yards after the catch. Few people anticipated Mooney to have such an immediate impact with the Bears. He ended his debut season with 61 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns.
The following season was Mooney’s greatest statistical year as a Bear. He developed a special relationship with quarterback Justin Fields and concluded the 2021 season with 81 receptions, 1,055 yards, and four touchdowns. Despite this achievement, his future seasons saw a significant drop in production.
It is difficult to determine the exact cause of Mooney’s decline in performance. Mooney, on the other hand, is an exceptional athlete with plenty of potential. Following a difficult season, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus offered Mooney some encouraging words.
“Yes, Darnell, as I previously stated, has been a true professional. He completed all tasks as requested. There were other games in which he was targeted, and he made some catches and gained some YAC yards, demonstrating some explosiveness.
Mooney has played 60 regular-season games in his career, totaling 213 receptions, 2,593 yards, and 11 touchdowns. The goal is that Mooney can return to being the productive, cunning wide receiver he once was.
