The Pittsburgh Steelers are still looking for a wide receiver.

When the team dealt Diontae Johnson, they were left without a WR2.

Since then, they have brought in some intriguing prospects for pre-draft visits and have also investigated a few experienced alternatives at the position.

They are now expanding their list of visits to include another receiver selected in this year’s NFL Draft class.

The Steelers will conduct a pre-draft visit with former Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, according to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic.

Problems With the Prospect Profile for Mitchell
Mitchell has a very uneven profile going into the NFL Draft this year.

He was off to a good start in college. As a freshman, he caught 29 passes for 426 yards on a national championship-winning Georgia Bulldogs squad. Despite resistance from pass catchers such as Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, and Jermaine Burton, Mitchell managed to do so.

Nothing went quite as nicely in year two. Mitchell played in just six games as a sophomore due to an injury, and in those contests, he only managed nine receptions for 134 yards.

In 2023, he moved to Texas, where he went on to have his best season to date.

Mitchell caught 55 passes for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior year.

Even though it was his greatest college season, his prospect profile remained unadjusted.

Based on Player Profiler, he broke out at a 38th percentile. Mitchell was in the 49th percentile according to his college target share.

His productivity is only ranked 17th in his class according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats.

His size at 6’2′′ and his athleticism might be enough to make a team forget about the aspects of his college experience that are missing from his profile.

Large Vapor in the Steelers’ Depth Chart
For the 2024 season, the Steelers have no need to be concerned about their #1 receiver position.Last season, George Pickens became the league’s genuine #1 wide receiver after amassing 1140 receiving yards while catching passes from the underwhelming combination of Mason Rudolph, Mitch Trubisky, and Kenny Pickett as quarterback.

He and the other receivers now listed on the depth chart, however, are separated by a very significant margin.

Behind Pickens, the squad has Calvin Austin, Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and Cordarrelle Patterson, three free agents that the team signed. In 2023, not one of those four players amassed 250 receiving yards.

Even the Steelers cut Allen Robinson this offseason despite his 280 yards as their third wide receiver the previous season.

Since none of the receivers on the squad have shown they can fill the position, the team must locate a WR2 before the season begins.

The Steelers didn’t let worries about Pickens stop them from selecting Mitchell in the draft, even though he isn’t the ideal option for that WR2 role.

Pickens only made 49 receptions for 727 yards during his greatest college season. A significant injury also plagued him for a large portion of his college career.

For the most part, the Steelers have been successful in putting aside concerns about his profile and taking a risk on Pickens in the second round. Perhaps they will give it another go with Mitchell in the NFL Draft this year.
