DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Tigers’ tweet on Thursday sparked speculation that the team had hired a new high-profile play-by-play commentator.

Bally Sports announced last month that Matt Shepard would not be returning as the Tigers’ lead by-play broadcaster. Shepard had previously worked as a television broadcaster for Fox Sports Detroit and Bally Sports Detroit.

The Tigers tweeted a video of a Tigers-Yankees highlight on Thursday, along with an emoji of a microphone.

Jason Benetti, a well-known broadcaster who primarily calls games for the Chicago White Sox but also does national broadcasts, is the voice on that call.

Although the Tigers have not confirmed a hire, fans are excited about the prospect of such a high-profile hire.

Tigers announce new play-by-play announcer

The Detroit Tigers have hired a new play-by-play voice.

Bally Sports announced last month that Matt Shepard would not be returning as the Tigers’ lead by-play broadcaster. Shepard had previously worked as a television broadcaster for Fox Sports Detroit and Bally Sports Detroit.

“I’m incredibly proud to join this historic and ascending Tigers franchise,” Benetti said in a statement. “It was clear from everyone I spoke with throughout the interview process why so many respected professionals and creative people have joined the organization in the last few years.” There’s something special about it, and I’m excited to share it with Tigers fans all over the world. I’d also like to thank Chris Ilitch, Ryan Gustafson, Scott Harris, and everyone else who has been so welcoming over the last few weeks. Everyone I met made it clear that this was the right place for me. I grew up in the Midwest and understand how important sports are, especially in the Motor City.”

Benetti will call at least 127 Tigers games each season, with time built in to meet national broadcast obligations. When those conflicts arise, the Tigers will shift long-time radio play-by-play announcer Dan Dickerson to television. Dickerson, who has previously filled in on television, agreed to do so in order to provide fans with the best broadcast experience possible throughout the season.

It’s unclear who else will join Benetti in the Bally Sports booth for the upcoming season.

“Jason is a world-class talent, and today represents yet another tremendous step forward for the Tigers as we continue to build a championship-level organization and experience for our fans,” said Ryan Gustafson, EVP/COO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment. “Jason’s story is inspiring, and our shared commitment to excellence and innovation was evident throughout our discussions.” We are thrilled to welcome Jason to the Tigers and Red Wings broadcast teams, where he will join an incredible group of broadcasters who provide the on-air experience our fans deserve.”
