Troy Deeney, a former Birmingham City player, recalls scoring against Aston Villa while playing for Watford in the Premier League.
Troy Deeney thinks his late Premier League brace against Aston Villa was the finest moment of his career.
Deeney, a Birmingham City supporter, is presently playing in League Two with Forest Green Rovers after spending the most of his career at Watford. He recalls from his time at Vicarage Road heaping further agony on Villa fans during the season they were relegated to the Championship.
“We played at our place,” he told The Players Channel podcast. “They were 2-1 up with like four minutes to go, and in the 88th minute their fans were getting on me saying how crap must you be, we’re winning away.”
“I scored two goals in the 90th and 90+2 minutes to help us win 3-2 in front of their fans.” On a football pitch, that was the happiest I’d ever been on a football pitch. I was giving it to them as if they were giving it to me.”
Deeney moved on to play for Villa’s archrivals Blues, where he scored 11 goals in 54 games. The 35-year-old Blues supporter aspired to play for the club after leaving Watford.
“We were up 1-0 when I scored to put us up 2-0 in front of their home crowd.” I scored when the ball was flipped up from a cross.
“I got down on my knees and took my badge off my shirt. I had lighters, £1 coins, £2 coins, and anything else was thrown at me, and then I got yellow carded! I was enraged. “I was ready for that game.”
