The World Series has begun.

The following season is the offseason.

The final game of Miguel Cabrera’s career ended the Detroit Tigers’ 2023 season nearly a month ago. The Tigers finished second in the American League Central with a 78-84 record.

Scott Harris, the Tigers’ president of baseball operations, is in his second offseason with the team.

In Year 1, his team went 39-34 after the All-Star break, finishing nine games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins in baseball’s weakest division. Harris hired Jeff Greenberg as general manager on September 21.

Here’s a breakdown of the Tigers’ key offseason dates.

The first day following the World Series
The 2023 World Series, which pits the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Texas Rangers, is set to conclude between Wednesday and Saturday, depending on how many games are played.

The following day, two Tigers players will become free agents: left-hander Matthew Boyd and right-handed reliever José Cisnero. For the next five days, the Tigers have exclusive negotiating rights with those two free agents.

The trade market will also reopen the day after the World Series.

On the day after the World Series two years ago, the Tigers (under former general manager Al Avila) acquired catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Cincinnati Reds.

GM Meetings are scheduled for November 6-9.
The meeting of general managers and presidents of baseball operations is the offseason’s first notable event. The general manager meetings are being held in Scottsdale, Arizona this offseason.

Harris is set to speak with reporters on November 7.

Although free-agent signings and trades are uncommon, general managers discuss league issues, offseason plans, and player availability in potential trades. Some agents attend in order to gauge the level of interest in their players on the open market.

It all comes down to laying the groundwork for future acquisitions.

Five days following the World Series
On this day, a lot happens.

There are several deadlines: Free agents can negotiate (and sign) with any team, teams or players must accept or decline options for the 2024 season, players on the 60-day injured list must be reinstated to the 40-man roster, and teams can give eligible free agents the qualifying offer — worth approximately $20.5 million.

The Tigers do not have any qualifying offer candidates, but everything else is important to know.
