The Detroit Tigers fanbase is divided on Javier Báez; here are their reactions.

Here are some reactions from Detroit Tigers fans to Javier Báez’s decision to participate.
Infielder Javier Báez opted into the final four years of his contract with the Detroit Tigers. He’s owed $98 million and will be with the Tigers until the 2027 season, barring any trades or DFAs. Those options are unlikely, and Báez will most likely remain in Detroit.

Since signing his contract with the Detroit Tigers, the fan base has been uninterested in Báez. You could poll ten fans on their feelings about Báez and his contract, and the results would be mixed. Some people dislike him and the moxie/swagger with which he plays.

Having said that, the fanbase was divided when it was announced that Báez would opt out of his contract and remain in Detroit. While it appeared to be free money, there was some speculation that he would test the free agent market, but Báez will remain with the Tigers.

Let’s take a look at how some Tigers fans reacted to the news.

Reaction #1: To begin, keep things light.

To keep things light, let’s start with a meme. Dave Barr (@DaveBarr12470) responded to Evan Petzold’s announcement with a gif of someone diving into a pool of money. Given that Báez is owed $98 million over four seasons, he will make a nice living for the Tigers as a shortstop.

He’ll earn $25 million over the next two seasons and $24 million over his final two seasons with the Tigers, with a $23.3 million “cap hit” as his Luxury Tax Salary. Báez hasn’t exactly been spectacular, so earning $25 million a year may seem like a steal to some, which is what Barr is making fun of with the gif above–gotta love some light-hearted content.
