Nottingham Forest have been linked with a January move for Rangers’ Borna Barisic. However, the Reds must exercise extreme caution, and there is a strong case to be made that they should shop elsewhere.

For a little while now, the Reds have been admiring Barisic. Forest were linked with him in the summer, but instead chose to pursue other options for their left-sided wing-back position.

With January quickly approaching, Forest will have to make a decision regarding Barisic. Last month, it was reported that Glasgow giants Rangers were planning to offer the Croatian a new contract in order to deter suitors.

Barisic should be approached with caution by Forest.
The Reds could add another left-back to their lineup. Harry Toffolo has the shirt for the time being, and on his current form, he does not deserve to lose it any time soon.

In reserve, Nuno Tavares is on loan from Arsenal, and Ola Aina has demonstrated that he can operate as a left-sided option if necessary.

Rangers have had Barisic on their books for some time, but Forest have been made aware of his contract situation. He will be a free agent in the summer, and several clubs are expected to be interested in him.

At 31, however, there is an argument that Barisic is the type of player who has sting Forest in the past. Barisic is likely past his prime, and the Reds have plenty of options at that position.

Other positions must be prioritized by Forest.
The Reds now have a very capable team. However, injuries have left some positions looking very short, and it is these that Forest must prioritize over Barisic.

A winger with speed and athleticism would be ideal. To be greedy, another striker would be welcome once the transfer window reopens.

For Forest, there are simply too many boxes that Barisic does not check. He’s getting older, the Reds have a number of left-backs, and the Reds must conclude that other areas require more reinforcement.

Barisic has played 218 times for Rangers and 35 times for Croatia. However, at this point in his career, he just doesn’t feel right for Forest.
