Formation change, January help and time for Sky Blues to take stock

Coventry City are one-third of the way through the 2023/24 Championship season when they take another international break. The Sky Blues have averaged just one point per game in their first 16 games, leaving them in 20th place in the division, five points off the relegation zone and ten points away from the play-off places, where everyone would prefer to see them.

A point against Stoke City last time out ended the club’s four-game losing streak, but it also extended the club’s winless streak to six games, with a trip to Millwall and a home game against Plymouth Argyle on the horizon when the league season resumes a week on Saturday. It is thus a good time for both manager Mark Robins and his coaching staff to take stock, looking at the positives, working on the negatives, and hoping that City can use Saturday’s goalless draw as a foundation upon which to build.

It’s also an excellent opportunity for fans to reflect on the season thus far. It’s fair to say that things haven’t gone as planned for most fans so far, with many disappointed by the slow start after reaching the dizzy heights of the play-off final at Wembley just six months ago.

There are numerous concerns about form, the caliber of the summer recruits, and what is required to put things right and turn things around. Callum O’Hare, City’s star midfielder, is back in training after a ten-month absence and finding his feet, while the club is experimenting with a new 4-3-3 formation. What are your thoughts on that? Is it the right way to go, and what do you think of a forward line that includes all three strikers?

The January transfer window is approaching, which should provide Robins with an opportunity to strengthen for the second half of the season. But, for the time being, there are plenty of positives in City’s performances, and the manager is confident that his new-look squad will gel in time for the festive season.
