Coventry City have had a difficult season in the Sky Bet Championship so far and will be looking to improve.

That was expected in the summer, with the departures of Viktor Gyokeres and Gus Hamer, but Sky Blues fans will have hoped that they’d be closer to the top of the table than they are now.

Of course, there is still a long way to go, but it appears that the best Coventry can hope for this season is to stay in the league and try again next year.

When we talk about Sam McCallum and why he should be a Sky Blues target, we’re talking about next summer.

Norwich City’s contract situation with Sam McCallum

According to Transfermarkt, McCallum’s contract at Norwich City expires next summer, and it doesn’t appear that he is close to signing a new deal with the Yellows, despite playing very little football this season.

Indeed, he has been used sparingly, appearing only three times and failing to complete a full match, and evidence suggests that he is on his way out of Carrow Road, which is where Coventry should come in.

Coventry should try to score.

McCallum, then, is a player who could be on the move next summer, and Coventry could be a good fit for him.

Of course, times have changed since he was last there, but during his time with the Sky Blues, he put in a number of fine performances and really demonstrated his potential and talent.

That form paved the way for him to move to Norwich, where he played regularly and displayed his powerful running and ball quality.

He played over 70 league games for Coventry City during his time there, both permanently and on loan, and it appears that he had a good time there.

There’s a strong case to be made that McCallum played the best football of his career at Norwich, and returning there could be just what he needs to jump-start his career, which has stalled a little at Carrow Road.

Indeed, he may need to move somewhere where he will be happy and able to play regularly in order to regain his best form, whereas Coventry would be getting a player they are familiar with and know can be an asset.

Of course, Mark Robins and the player must be interested, but it could be a move that benefits all parties as they look for brighter times in 2024/25 after what has been a difficult campaign for both.
