With 52 competitive appearances, 28 goals, and 11 assists, he was a major factor in leading Coventry City back to League One in that season.

It was clear from his two assists in the play-off final against Exeter City how valuable he was, and there would be plenty of interest in him during the summer transfer window.

That summer, the Scotsman had two obvious choices: continue with Mark Robins’ Coventry, a team that was rising, or advance to a different club.

At Reading FC, how was Marc McNulty’s relationship?

Ultimately, he chose to move to Reading, the then-championship team, for an estimated fee of £1.2 million. There, he teamed up with Paul Clement.

Even though the Royals barely avoided relegation at the end of the 2017–18 season, they had a lot of potential on paper and had finished as second-tier play-off finalists the season before.

Furthermore, with Yann Kermorgant’s contract expiring in the summer of 2018 and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson failing to secure a long-term starting position in Berkshire, McNulty had a genuine opportunity to make an impact at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Sadly, McNulty was never able to establish himself as a consistent starter for the Royals. He appeared in just 17 games for the team during the 2018–19 season.

He never had a string of winning games to establish his value, and his November of that season’s missed penalty against Leeds United only made matters worse.
