Despite the Sonny Grey Deal, the Cardinals are still considered favourites to sign a frontline starter. Grey may not be the only big name this winter.

After a turbulent 2023 season, the St. Louis Cardinals’ primary goal this winter has been to reassemble the pitching staff.

The Cardinals have been successful in restocking their depleted rotation from the previous season after bringing in right-hander Kyle Gibson, former Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn, and reigning American League Cy Young runner-up Sonny Grey.

There is still a significant potential that St. Louis may reunite with a highly sought-after starting pitcher despite the most recent signings.

The oddsmakers at BetOnline have Jordan Montgomery, a left-hander, ranked as one of the Cardinals’ top signing prospects. With +300 odds (25%) to go, St. Louis is in to face the defending World Series winner, who should receive a large paycheck.

Between his stints with the Texas Rangers and St. Louis in 2023, Montgomery recorded a 3.20 ERA, 166-to-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio,.247 batting average against, and 1.19 WHIP in 188 2/3 innings.

According to reports, Montgomery would rather sign with one of his previous organisations, putting St. Louis in a competitive position to sign the experienced pitcher alongside the New York Yankees and Rangers.

According to Tim Britton of The Athletic, the southpaw was expected to sign an offseason contract for between five years and $105 million. However, some rumours have suggested that he would sign a contract more in line with Carlos Rodon’s six-year, $162 million agreement with the Yankees.

Reintroducing Montgomery to the starting lineup would increase the Cardinals’ chances of making a run at the postseason in 2024.

Will the Cardinals invest the cash necessary to get Montgomery back?
