Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma’s captain and starting quarterback on Senior Day against West Virginia, was suspended for two plays on Saturday.

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley introduced Mayfield into the game on the Sooners’ second series. His replacement, sophomore quarterback Kyler Murray, presented OU supporters with a promising look of the future, rushing for 66 yards on the first drive. Then running back Rodney Anderson slammed it in for a four-yard score. Murray did not attempt a pass throughout the two-play drive.

Mayfield was suspended for his unsportsmanlike behavior against Kansas last Saturday, which included taunting with a profanity-laced diatribe and groping his crotch on the sidelines.

Mayfield, a senior who remains a strong Heisman Trophy candidate, was upset about not starting or captaining his final regular-season home game in Norman, Okla., expressing that it would “be tough” before kickoff.

When Mayfield entered the game at 7:08 in the first quarter, he was met with a standing ovation before completing an 8-yard touchdown pass shortly thereafter.

Mayfield finished with 281 yards and three touchdowns in Oklahoma’s 59-31 victory.
