According to Justin P. Hicks of MLive, offensive lineman Anthony Herbert of Northern Michigan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 20 after working out in the morning.

A university representative was quoted by Hicks as saying that Herbert could not be revived by emergency personnel.

After the workout and breakfast, Herbert went back to his room, according to Hicks, and that’s when the EMTs were summoned for his medical emergency.

“What caused his passing is unknown at this time, and right now our concern is for Anthony’s family, friends, teammates, coaches and team staff, teachers and fellow students,” read a statement issued by University President Fritz Erickson, according to Hicks.

Head coach Kyle Nystrom said in a statement, “In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man,” according to Hicks. He was a leader on the offensive line and well-liked by both his coaches and teammates. We are grieving over this tragedy and sending our condolences to his family.”

According to Hicks, Herbert was a member of the All-GLIAC academic team and started 11 games in the 2016–17 campaign.
