ASHBURN, VA — The Washington Commanders have chosen Dan Quinn, the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, to oversee the franchise. The team acknowledged to WUSA9 that they had reached a verbal agreement with Quinn on Thursday.

Quinn recently completed his third season with the Cowboys. He was the Falcons’ head coach for five years (2015-20), going 43-42 and earning a Super Bowl berth in 2016. Quinn previously served as defensive coordinator in Seattle during the Seahawks’ back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in 2013 and 2014.

The new Commanders coach also has ties to the Maryland region. Quinn attended Salisbury University, where he played football as a defensive lineman from 1990 to 1993 and lettered twice in track and field. He was the football team captain in 1992 and 1993 and was named into the Salisbury State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Quinn began his coaching career in the Commonwealth, serving as the defensive line coach at the College of William and Mary in 1994 before spending one season at Virginia Military Institute in 1995.

The search for the 31st coach in Washington club history began in January, when the team’s administration announced Ron Rivera’s departure. The majority owner, Josh Harris, brought in sports.

Following Rivera’s removal from the team, Harris vowed a “thorough but speedy” search. That process includes interviews with several league hopefuls, including Eric Bieniemy, Raheem Morris, Bobby Slowik, Ben Johnson, and others.

This isn’t the first time Washington has chosen a Dallas native to run the show. Norv Turner was hired Washington’s head coach in 1994, after winning back-to-back Super Bowls as Dallas’ offensive coordinator.

Now that the head coaching position has been filled, the team’s focus shifts to the NFL Draft. The Commanders have acquired the second overall pick. With organizational changes complete, quarterback Sam Howell’s future is uncertain. The team also needs help.
