“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to tell to all well-wishers that regrettably, Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,” Sechere wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

“My heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones. I’d like to thank everyone for their prayers and support. I respectfully request that everyone respect the family’s privacy during this terrible time while we make the required arrangements.

Atsu, a Ghana international, was 31 years old and had been playing for Hatayspor in the Turkish Super Lig. He made 121 appearances for Newcastle and was a member of the club that won promotion back to the Premier League in 2017.

While under contract with Chelsea, Atsu spent time on loan at Everton and Bournemouth. Former Chelsea captain John Terry posted a photo of Atsu along with the phrase, “RIP my friend.”
