Danielle Downey, a former LPGA player, coach, and director of golf operations, was involved in a fatal vehicle accident Thursday night in Auburn, Alabama. Downey, 33, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of the East Alabama Medical Center Thursday night, after only one hour after arriving following her accident.

Auburn’s head women’s coach, Kim Evans, stated in a news release:

“I’m absolutely devastated. Danielle meant so lot to me, the girls, and the program. Not only did she devote much of her life to Auburn as a student-athlete and mentor to these young women, but she was also extremely helpful to the team throughout some difficult moments over the last year. Danielle felt like a daughter to me.”

Golf Coach Downey will always be remembered. According to Auburn, Downey is survived by her parents, Mike and Phyllis Downey, as well as her sisters Erica Setzer, Melissa Sage, and Shawna Tomasso. Plans for a memorial service in Auburn, Alabama are still pending.
