CALGARY — Veteran goaltender James Reimer stopped 38 shots as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Calgary Flames 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Patrick Kane and Lucas Raymond each had a goal and an assist as the Red Wings (28-20-6) ended a two-game losing run. David Perron, J.T. Compher, and Dylan Larkin all scored.
Reimer, in his 14th NHL season, recorded his 30th career shutout and second this season with Detroit.
Reimer also played in net when the two teams last met in Detroit on October 22. He stopped 29 shots in the Red Wings’ 6-2 victory.
The Flames’ starting goaltender was Jacob Markstrom (25-25-5). However, he was pulled at 6:41 in the second period after conceding four goals on 12 shots.
Dan Vladar then made eight stops in relief for the Flames, who have dropped three straight games and six of their last seven in the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Flames dominated the early game and had a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring courtesy to the efforts of Jonathan Huberdeau, Yegor Sharangovich, and Andrei Kuzmenko.
At 12:34 in the first period, Reimer made an excellent glove save on Kuzmenko’s slapshot. It occurred immediately after he blocked Huberdeau’s wrist shot.
Kane scored at 14:56, three seconds into a power play following a high-sticking call on Calgary rookie Connor Zary. Kane, playing the point, blasted a Moritz Seider pass into the top corner past Markstrom’s blocker.
The Wings went ahead 2-0 just 61 seconds later. Compher received a pass from Raymond and blasted a fast shot that glanced off Calgary defenceman Rasmus Andersson’s stick and past Markstrom.
At 5:12 in the second period, Larkin converted a great cross-crease pass from Kane for another Detroit power play goal.
Only 89 seconds later, Detroit led 4-0 as Perron wired a pass from Andrew Copp past Markstrom, who was quickly dismissed of his duties by Calgary coach Ryan Huska.
Raymond finished the scoring with 4:20 left to play.
“We battled hard tonight, and Reims was great for us,” Larkin said of his team’s comeback victory. “We did not have the best start. We were a little flat. But our power play energized us. We were successful tonight because to special teams, goaltending, and solid defensive play.”
