Most Yankees fans may be disappointed that Aaron Boone is returning, but two Yankees icons appear to have Boone’s back when it comes to his return as manager of the team.

On Wednesday night, Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Derek Jeter chimed in on Boone at separate events. Rivera and Jeter were Boone’s teammates during his one season in the Bronx in 2003, and both were members of the Yankees’ last five World Series teams.

It was previously reported that the great closer was critical of the Yankees’ choice to rehire him as manager when appearing at the Sports Forum of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives.

“If I were the owner, Aaron Boone would not stay… When things don’t go as planned, all of the blame falls on the manager, and someone has to pay the price, which we won’t place on the players,” Rivera stated, according to a translated version of his remarks by SNY.

“I stated that when a team like this, the New York Yankees, is anticipated to win the season that they had, and they don’t, the manager is always the one who ends up paying,” Rivera said during a phone interview with the Associated Press.
