Nashville, Tennessee — Outfielder

Last year, the Brewers won the NL Central while relying heavily on rookies, with Brice Turang starting at second base and Sal Frelick and Joey Wiemer playing outfield. Garrett Mitchell was also the Brewers’ starting center fielder at the start of the season, but a shoulder injury sidelined him for much of the season.

Chourio is recognized as one of baseball’s most promising young players. Despite not turning 20 until March 11, Chourio has moved quickly enough in the Brewers’ farm system to play six games for Triple-A Nashville late last season.

has signed to the highest contract for a player with no major league experience, a $82 million, eight-year agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers, the team said Monday.

The 19-year-old has only played six games above Double-A. His contract includes team options for 2032 and 2033.

He surpassed the previous high for a player yet to make his debut, which was a $50 million, six-year contract signed by outfielder Luis Robert with the Chicago White Sox in 2020. Robert’s signing was announced on January 2, 2020, and he made his MLB debut on July 24, 2020. Chicago also signed designated hitter/outfielder Eloy Jiménez to a $43 million, six-year contract in March 2019, ahead of his debut.

Chourio could begin the 2024 season in the Major Leagues. The deal covers his full arbitration eligibility time, as well as what could have been his first two seasons after free agency.

Milwaukee is beginning its first season under new manager Pat Murphy, who replaces Craig Counsell, who resigned to manage the Chicago Cubs.
