Tyrod Taylor is now the official backup quarterback for the New York Jets. Taylor has spent the last two seasons with the New York Giants and will remain at MetLife Stadium in 2024. He will play second-string behind starter Aaron Rodgers.

The veteran dual-threat signed a two-year contract worth up to $18 million, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero said on Tuesday.

Taylor had some positive moments when he started for the Giants in 2023. In Week 7, he led the G-Men to a 13-10 victory over the Washington Commanders, and in Week 18, they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by 27-10. Taylor completed 64.4% of his passes in 11 games and five starts, and he had a 5-3 touchdown-interception ratio.

Taylor, 34, will be valued as a seasoned contributor who can step in instantly if Rodgers is injured during the upcoming season. The Jets lacked a dependable backup who could carry their playoff-caliber group to the playoffs in Rodgers’ absence, while Zach Wilson and Trevor Siemian had their moments.

Wilson is about to go. Taylor, who has been a backup in roughly eight of his 13 professional seasons, will add strength to the Jets’ depth chart.
