The Green Bay Packers have started releasing players throughout the 2024 offseason. Unfortunately for them, they will only see them twice a year when they begin the next phase of their careers somewhere in the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers and their fans have become accustomed to this. The Green Bay Packers have had to deal with previous players on numerous occasions, whether it’s Brett Favre and Za’Darious Smith playing for the Vikings or Robert Tonyan and Lukas Patrick joining the Chicago Bears.

Aaron Jones recently signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings, much to the displeasure of Green Bay Packers fans. However, that was not the only interdivisional move the Packers will face in the 2024-25 season, as a former safety will play for the Chicago Bears next year.

Johnathan Owens was a one-year signee with the Green Bay Packers in 2023, joining an otherwise forgettable secondary that the Packers are currently overhauling. He is on the move after playing the most snaps of any Packers safety in the previous season.

In 2023, Jonathan Owens played 928 snaps for the Green Bay Packers (3rd most on the whole defense). He was signed to a one-year, $1 million contract for that season. Owens contributed significantly to the Green Bay Packers’ great season, with 84 total tackles, three pass deflections, and a highlight scoop and score touchdown on Thanksgiving.

Jonathan Owens also played a significant role on special teams, typically serving as the team’s gunner. His presence was welcome in that area, as he made several crucial tackles throughout the season to pin opposing offenses deep.

Despite the high-profile signing of Xavier Mckinney, the Green Bay Packers remain thin at safety. With the departures of starters Rudy Ford and Darnell Savage, the Packers now have only four safety on their roster, three of whom have less than two years of NFL experience. With the draft and the remaining free agents on the board, there’s little doubt the Green Bay Packers will be able to fix the issue.

During his time in Green Bay, Owens also brought another athlete along. His wife is Simon Biles, an Olympic gold medalist. She was a prominent supporter of him and the Green Bay Packers during the season, frequently appearing at games. She continues to support him while he relocates to Chicago.

They both have a great regard for the city and the Green Bay Packers organization, but Simone Biles was quick to point out the benefits of her husband’s move to a mega-city.

Making light of the fact that Green Bay does not have a major airport. She also enjoys the cuisine and city of Chicago.

With the departure of Johnathan Owens, the Green Bay Packers also lose a member of their celebrity fan ring of honor.
