Dwyane Wade played in the NBA for 16 years, winning three championships,
13 all-star games, and being named the league’s highest scorer.
Wade, 41, tells CNBC Make It that he feels healthier than he did on the court.
The difference, he argues, is a shift in his priorities. Wade’s physical fitness
was his top priority as a player. In retirement, he has prioritized his complete
well-being, including mental health and isolation.
“I feel like I’m in better shape now than when I was a player. I was quite
muscular, but I didn’t take care of my physique as well as I should have since I
didn’t know how,” he adds.
“I care more about [my regular wellness routines],” Wade says. “I recognize their relevance.”

Wade and his 21-year-old son, Zaire, who plays professional basketball in the
Basketball Africa League, have formed a relationship with wellness business
Thorne to incorporate more healthy habits into their life for longevity.
Wade retired in 2019, so he no longer received the daily medical advise that
came with his job as an NBA player. As a result, he started having aches and pains more often.
“I needed to go out and gather my own information. I was looking for things
that would help me succeed in all of the areas that I needed to as someone who
considers himself an athlete. “But I’m getting older,” Wade admits.
Wade now likes to meditate in the mornings. “We should all observe a moment
of silence for ourselves,” he says.
Wade jokes that he’s “a narcissist about how I look,” despite the fact that other
retired sportsmen willingly leave the gym. The 2006 NBA Finals MVP
maintains a stringent workout schedule.
“No matter what hour it is, I wake up every day, go downstairs, and start to
work,” he says. “I think it’s good to get your heart rate up [and] challenge
yourself in the gym.”
Wade uses the steam room and a cold tub to recover from his workout. Then
Wade, who claims he “doesn’t eat a lot of vegetables,” gets his daily greens
supplements from Thorne.
Wade’s routine has evolved as he discovered what works best for him.
Regarding his multi-step morning regimen, he explains, “I have my full line-up
in a sense.” “That’s something I firmly believe in. As if I had an f—ing face ritual!
