MILWAUKEE — The Archdiocese of Milwaukee shared that Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki will sign and send his retirement letter this month.

Canon Law, or laws that help govern the Catholic Church, states that all bishops must submit a resignation when they are 75. Per Canon Law, the pope can decide if he will accept the bishop’s resignation or ask them to remain in their position until someone is set to take their place.

In accordance with the rule, Listecki will submit his resignation to Pope Francis on his 75th birthday, Tuesday, March 12.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee said Listecki will do so at 9:30 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church Pastoral Center in St. Francis, Wis.

Listecki is the 11th archbishop of Milwaukee; he was installed as such on Jan. 4, 2010. Before coming to Milwaukee he served as a bishop in the Diocese of La Crosse.
