A college football player with the University of Oregon was arrested Monday in connection to a hit-and-run that killed a 46-year-old man, according to police.
The Eugene Police Department said they are investigating 19-year-old Daylen Amir Austin, a defensive back, after the fatal crash took place at W. 4th Avenue and Polk Street in Eugene at around 9:10 p.m.
“Daylen Amir Austin, age 19, was arrested at 11:45 p.m. on April 15 and has initially been charged with felony Hit and Run,” police said in a statement. “This is a complex investigation and EPD is still gathering information to be submitted to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office for a final charging decision.”
No other details have been released about the 46-year-old man who was killed.
We are aware of the incident and are awaiting additional information,” a spokesperson from the university told ESPN in a statement.
As a freshman in 2023, Austin appeared in three games after coming to the University of Oregon from Long Beach Poly High in Southern California, according to ESPN. He was ESPN’s No. 142-ranked player in the class of 2023 and the No. 11 player in California.
In Oregon, a hit-and-run with a vehicle is a Class C felony and is punishable by up to five years in prison.
