Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have four points from their first two Premier League games ahead of their showdown at St James’ Park on Sunday.
After drawing 1-1 with recently promoted Leicester City on the first day of play, Tottenham defeated Everton 4-0 the following weekend to secure their first victory of the year.
Conversely, Newcastle, who defeated Southampton 1-0 in their season opener despite playing with ten men, drew 1-1 with Bournemouth last weekend.
The game should be intriguing because both teams are vying for a spot in the top four.
Paul Merson also thinks Newcastle will improve on their impressive start to the season with a significant win in front of their home supporters.
Though Merson called Spurs’ 4-0 victory against Everton “amazing,” he believes the team’s road performance is unquestionably concerning.
“Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over Everton last Saturday was an outstanding result. However, I’m betting on Newcastle to win this one,” Merson stated in his Sportskeeda blog.
“Considering that Spurs are playing away from home, this is a true test for them.
“This is a significant test for them psychologically as well because I’ve seen Tottenham get smashed on the road in this specific fixture in the past.”
The legendary player for Arsenal called attention to Tottenham’s difficulties in the second half against Leicester, adding that the home team will win 2-1 thanks to a lively atmosphere at St. James’ Park.

“The supporters at St. James’ Park will undoubtedly be up for this game,” Merson went on. On Sunday, the vibe will be different.
“Tottenham has a lot to lose in this match, but it will be a major win for them if they emerge unharmed.
“I wasn’t particularly impressed with the second-half effort against Leicester.”
